Virus Removal
Our $75 Fix-It fee for viruses covers a lot of ground. Here is what you can expect:
- Removal of simple viruses or malware
- Recover data from ‘dead’ hard drives
- Resolve windows corruption issues
- Speed up your computer
Once your computer is cleaned and returned to you, documentation will be provided, or training available, to make you more comfortable with computer security behavior. Unfortunately there is no magic bullet to keep a computer safe from dangerous software, other than changing personal behavior. We can make sure you are trained to protect yourself online.
Rootkits Suck
Some new viruses are called ‘rootkits.’ Wikipedia defines a rootkitW as:
“A rootkit is a software program or coordinated set of programs designed to gain control over a computer system or network of computing systems. In virtually all cases, the purpose and motive being to perform any manner of malign act upon a host computing system.”
Rootkits are virtually impossible to detect and remove. We really only know that rootkits are present on a machine by the damage they cause or their continued resurrection after cleaning. When a rootkit is present, the only solution is to wipe the computer and do a clean install of the operating system. Rootkits increase our repair fee by $100.
A clean install of Windows is a time-intensive process. All user data (the files you have created, like pictures, music, or documents) must be backed up and saved separate from the computer. The machine is then ‘wiped clean’ and set back to an empty configuration. Windows is then installed manually, and all software in Windows must be reinstalled. Only after this is complete can user data be moved back onto the machine.
